VOLVO S70 and V70

Rockleigh, NJ -- Volvo's front-wheel-drive S70 and V70 series represent the corner stone of 1998’s product line-up. While the S70 and V70 are available in four different versions: the S70 and V70, the S70 and V70 GLT, and the S70 and V70 T5, the V70 is offered in three additional all-wheel-drive configurations.

While all versions of the S70 and V70 share essentially the same suspension, basic drivetrain and critical dimensions, they differ in their levels of performance and luxury. They do not differ at all, however, in their levels of safety and occupant protection.


All 1998 Volvo S70 and V70 models are equipped with dual front and dual side-impact air bags, the company's energy-absorbing structure--including their patented SIPS--as well as three-point safety belts and award winning head restraints at all five seating positions.

In addition, all Volvo S70 and V70s feature front seat belts with automatic, pyrotechnically actuated pretensioners to ensure that the belts are cinched down in the event of a frontal impact.

Volvo’s world-famous Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) has been enhanced. The B-pillars, the most important link in the system, have been reinforced in order to help further reduce the risk of severe chest injuries. Additionally, the interior panels on these pillars have been given softer padding to help provide more effective head protection.

The seat belt pretensioners have also been enhanced with a higher pyrotechnic charge, enabling them to react more rapidly in certain types of collisions.

More sophisticated methods are being used at Volvo to measure forces acting on the human body in a collision. This has led to the introduction of a new steering column in the S70 and V70 that is split at three points and, as a result, collapses further away from the driver in the event of certain types of collisions. The risk of knee injuries has also been reduced as the knee guard in the driver’s area now has more space to deform.

A new safety feature for 1998 is the eye-level Light Emitting Diode (LED) brake light on the rear window. As LED lights come on far more rapidly than a standard light bulb, road users behind the car are given an earlier warning that the brakes are being applied. On the other end of the car, new headlights feature two internal reflectors and illuminate the road with ten percent more light than their 1997 counterparts.

All Volvo S70 and V70 models have daytime running lights. The headlamps themselves are semi-sealed beams with ten percent higher light output than previous years and features a replaceable halogen bulb. The all models can be equipped with optional washer/wiper system. In addition, there's a single fog lamp on the rear of every S70 and V70 model.


All S70 and V70 models are powered by a transversely mounted, in-line, five-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, and the block and cylinder head are both made of die-cast aluminum. However, engine specifics within each series vary. All engines in the S70 and V70 models meet OBD-II requirements.

Naturally-aspirated S70 and V70s, and S70 and V70 T5s are available with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The S70 and V70 GLTs and all of the V70 AWD variants are available only with an automatic transmission.

The automatic transmission offers the driver three driving modes: Economy, Sport, and Winter/Wet. The Winter/Wet setting locks out First and Second gears to help the car get rolling on slippery road surfaces. Additional traction may be gained with Volvo's Traction Control System, TRACS. TRACS is a low-speed system that operates through feedback from the anti-lock brake system (ABS) to control front wheelspin at speeds less than 25 mph. TRACS is part of Volvo’s Cold Weather package which is optional on all S70 and V70s and standard on all AWD offerings.

S70 and V70 Range

Depending on whether it's equipped with a manual or automatic transmission and whether it's being sold in California, Massachusetts, New York, or one of the other forty-seven states, the S70 and V70 may have one of three engines.

All cars are equipped with a Transitional Low Emissions Vehicle (TLEV) engines. All TLEV engines share the same Bosch Motronic 4.4 engine management system.

S70 and V70

The series is equipped with a naturally aspirated 168 horsepower all-alloy engine. Engine management regulated by a Bosch Motronic 4.4 system. The engine develops peak torque of 162 16/ft at 4700 rpm while maximum horsepower occurs at 6100 rpm. Both models are available with either a 4-speed automatic transmission or 5-speed manual transmission. The automatic transmission equipped models achieve an EPA fuel economy rating of 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway while the manual transmission models achieve 20 mpg and 29 mpg respectively.

For 1998, the normally aspirated S70 and V70s have an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 20 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg on the highway.

S70 and V70 GLT

S70 and V70 GLT engine is characterized by Volvo as a HT/LR (High Torque Low Rev) design. Like the naturally-aspirated version, the HT/LR engine has a Bosch Motronic 4.4 engine management system. The motor develops 190 horsepower at 5100 rpm and 197 lb.ft. of torque at 1800 rpm versus the 1996 version which had 168 hp at 6200 rpm and 162 1b.ft. at 4700 rpm. This is achieved through use of a light-pressure turbocharger and a air to air intercooler.

Available only with automatic transmission, both the S70 and V70 two-wheel drive vehicles have an EPA fuel economy rating of 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

S70 and V70 T5

The S70 and V70 T5s have a 2.3-liter five-cylinder engine equipped with a high-pressure turbocharger and intercooler as well as a Bosch Motronic 4.4 engine management system. The engine develops 236 horsepower at 5100 rpm and 243 lb.ft. of torque at 2100 rpm. For 1998 there is an increase of 14 horsepower and 22 lb/ft of torque from this engine’s 1998 cousin.

New for 1998 all T5s can be equipped with Volvo's five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic transmission. The V70 R AWD is available only with automatic transmission. Both manual and automatic transmission equipped versions of the S70 and V70 T5 are rated at 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

V70 AWD Family

New are three unique versions of the versatile V70 platform: V70 AWD, V70 XC AWD, and the V70 R AWD. All offer exceptional on-road traction during demanding conditions, albeit each model’s driver may have different interpretations of ‘traction’.


High on the V70 AWD owner’s mind might be concern for driving during nature’s nasty weather. Volvo’s automatic All-Wheel-Drive provides almost instantaneous traction selection from the wheels that slip to those that provide the best traction at the moment. The AWD uses the same HT/LR light-pressure turbocharged engine found on the GLT models. EPA fuel rating is 18 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway.


The V70 XC, cross country, is uniquely suited to the outdoor enthusiastic. With a ground clearance advantage of 1 inch and 2 inches of ride height over non-AWD V70s plus all-wheel traction the XC is an excellent all-season performer. Whether towing a boat or trailer (3,300 lb capacity), or traversing back country snowy roads or those with loose gravel surfaces, the XC helps to make traveling a little safer. The XC uses the same HT/LR engine as the V70 GLT and V70 AWD. EPA fuel rating is 18 in the city and 24 on the highway.


Traction means something completely different to the V70 R AWD driver. The objective here is transfer of power. Planting 236 hp with 243 lb/ft of torque onto asphalt is optimally achieved with the R AWD. Fitted with high performance Michelin Pilot 205/55/16’s on special 7x16” alloy wheels there is no other Volvo that can deliver this much horsepower to all four wheels. Special interior treatment includes unique patterned alloy dash trim, diamond patterned seating surface with leather trim, and a 200 watt 8 speaker audio system with an in-dash 3 CD changer, AM/FM Stereo, and Cassette. EPA fuel rating is 18 in the city and 25 on the highway.

Regardless of body type or model designation, all 1998 Volvo S70 and V70 series models have the same essential underbody structure and fully independent suspension.

The transversely mounted engine and transmission are in an alloy subframe to further isolate drivetrain noise and vibration from the passenger compartment. The front subframe also carries the front suspension.

The S70 and V70 series uses a MacPherson strut front suspension with a stabilizer bar. The coil springs are asymmetrically mounted over the struts and shock absorbers. The stabilizer bar on all models has a 20-mm diameter. All V70 AWDs use a 20.5-mm diameter stabilizer bar.

All S70 and V70s utilize Volvo's patented Delta-link rear suspension system. This features separate coil springs and shock absorbers on lower control arms made of aluminum alloy. These control arms are attached to the car's underbody via separate, short links called "Delta" links. When used on sedans or with the Volvo Sport Suspension, this rear suspension system also includes an stabilizer bar. The S70 and V70, S70 and V70 GLT and T5 sedans and wagons have a 19.5-mm diameter stabilizer bar.

All of the V70 AWD family uses a rear drive and suspension unit similar to the S90 and V90 series, but features a mono-leaf composite spring rather than coil springs. The choice of this unit, rather than engineering a completely new one, is a cleaver bit of engineering. The drive unit was fitted with minor modifications, required virtually no re-engineering, and created only minor changes in manufacturing. Which means that all the good characteristics of the S90/V90 are transplanted into this vehicle. And this also turned out to be a very cost effective solution to a potentially tricky problem.

All S70 and V70 series cars are equipped with four-wheel disc brakes with a Bosch anti-lock system (ABS) as standard equipment. All S70 and V70-series models have vented 11.0 inch front discs and solid 11.5 inch rear discs. The parking brake is a mechanically operated drum brake system.

In addition, all models have power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering with a 16.8:1 ratio and 3.2 turns of the steering wheel between locks. Naturally-aspirated sedans and wagons have a 33.5-foot diameter turning circle. Turbocharged models have 34.8 foot turning circle due to their larger wheel and tire package. V70 AWDs have a turning circle of 37.7 feet.

The S70 and V70, and S70 and V70 GLT are equipped with 195/60VR15 Michelin MXV 4 all-season tires on 6.5x15-inch wheels. The S70 and V70 have steel wheels; the S70 and V70 GLT have six-spoke alloy wheels which are optional for the S70 and V70.

The S70 and V70 T5 ride on 205/50 ZR16 Michelin tires and 6.5x16-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. Both T5 models may be equipped with optional 205/55 ZR16 Michelin tires.

The V70 AWD rides on 205/55/16” all-season radial tires mounted on five-spoke alloy wheels. The XC AWD uses 205/65/15” Continental Conti Touring all-season tires. The R AWD features 205/55/16 ZR Michelin Pilot’s mounted on 7x16” alloy rims.

Wagons can be equipped with an optional load rail system that accommodates up to 220 pounds when properly loaded. All sedans and wagons have a towing capacity of 3,300 pounds.

Comfort and Convenience Features

All S70 and V70 series models have standard equipment which includes cruise control; heated, power outside mirrors; power windows and door locks; an adjustable tilt steering column; and a two-step remote keyless entry system. (The first step unlocks the driver's door, the second unlocks all the doors, trunk or rear hatch and the fuel-filler door). Armrests with cupholders are fitted to all models. New for 1998 is the location of the master controls for windows, power mirrors, door lock/unlock, fuel lid release, and rear hatch or trunk lid release which are located in the drivers door panel.

All S70 and V70 models come equipped with CFC-free air conditioning, with separate temperature controls for the driver and front passenger. All models other than the S70 and V70 have an automatic electronic climate control system.

The rear seatbacks are split 60/40 to accommodate objects of various sizes and shapes. For additional cargo carrying capacity, the front passenger seat backrest folds completely forward, providing nearly nine feet of loading capacity for long items.

The S70 and V70 come equipped with an eight-way manually adjustable driver seat; all other models in the S70 and V70 series have an eight-way electrically adjustable driver's seat with three memory settings. All models, with the exception of the V70 XC AWD and V70 R, have standard velour upholstery and leather available as an option.

All models except the S70 and V70 and V70 AWD have as standard equipment a power sliding/tilting glass sunroof. The XC AWD and R AWD have this feature.

Also standard on the S70 and V70 T5, and all AWD models, is an electrically adjustable front passenger seat with three memory settings. Heated front seats are optional on all S70 and V70 models. The S70 and V70 T5 also boasts a leather-wrapped steering wheel with a tilt/telescope adjusting steering column.

The S70 and V70 and S70 and V70 GLT are equipped with a six-speaker audio system. It has an electronically tuned AM/FM/cassette with anti-theft circuitry and CD compatibility. The unit in the all S70 and V70s has an 100 watt amplifier. All T5 models have electronically tuned AM/FM/cassette with anit-theft circuitry and a single in-dash CD player. For all series a remote-mounted CD changer is available as a dealer accessory. New in the GLT and T5 models is a dual-diversity antenna system for optimum AM/FM reception in areas with poor radio signal transmission.


All S70 and V70 series models sit on a 104.9-inch wheelbase. They all have a front track of 59.8 inches and a rear track of 57.9 inches. Sedans and wagons are 185.9 inches long. All S70 and V70 models are 69.3 inches wide. Sedans are 55.2 inches tall and the wagons are 56.2 inches tall.

The sedans offer 15.1 cubic feet of trunk space, while the wagons have 37.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the rear seatbacks up. When the rear seats are folded, sedans have 33.2 cubic feet and wagons have 77.2 cubic feet of storage space is available.

The S70 and V70 sedan has a curb weight of 3,152 pounds (manual transmission) or 3,206 pounds (automatic transmission). While the wagon weighs 3,259 (manual transmission) or 3,307 pounds (automatic transmission). The S70 and V70 GLT weighs 3,300 pounds in sedan and 3,402 pounds as a wagon. The S70 and V70 T5 sedan weighs 3,272 pounds (manual transmission) or 3,333 pounds (automatic transmission) and its wagon version weighs 3,371 pounds (manual transmission) or 3,433 pounds (automatic transmission). The V70 AWD weighs 3,735 pounds, the V70 XC AWD weighs 3,728 and the V70 R AWD weights 3,788 pounds.
