Safety Squared: Collision Avoidance Package
Everyone needs a little support from time to time, and Volvo has your back. The latest driver-support feature was launched in November as an option on the all-new V70, and will also carry-over to the all-new XC70 and all-new S80. It's really more than one feature, though. It is a combination of five associated systems put together into one Collision Avoidance Package. The individual elements include: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Warning with Auto Brake, Distance Alert, Lane Departure Warning and a world's first Driver Alert Control. Together, they help the driver monitor what is going on around the car.

With the launch of the S80, we introduced Adaptive Cruise Control with a collision avoidance system. Using input from the Distance Alert function, the system precharges the brakes to help shorten stopping distances in a panic situation as well as providing a visual and audible alert if the distance between
the Volvo and a car in front closes quickly. The second-generation system includes several new elements, and with the addition of a forward-facing camera to supplement the grill-mounted radar, the brakes not only precharge in the event of an impending collision, but the system will actually start to apply the brakes. This is called Auto Brake. The Auto Brake function can brake the car up to 50% of maximum capacity. The system will not necessarily prevent a collision, but it is designed to help reduce the severity of the impact. The camera mounted at the top of the windshield is really what made this latest advance possible. The "visual" data it supplies to the system supplement the radar-based system to further sharpen the system's overall integrity.

The camera allows two other advanced features to support the driver in the quest for a safer drive. The first is Lane Departure Warning. This system monitors the car's position on the roadway, primarily using road markings as its reference. By continuously monitoring and comparing from one millisecond to the next, the system tries to determine when the car is drifting (vs. intended lane change) and attempts to warn an inattentive driver with an audible alert.

The next new feature is the Driver Alert System. As with the Lane Departure, Driver Alert monitors vehicle position and other inputs into the car to "score" driver's behavior over a period of time. If the system detects behavior consistent with that of a drowsy or distracted driver, it responds with an audible alert as well as with an indicator in the vehicle display.

The Collision Avoidance Package is a comprehensive system that watches out for drivers and passengers. Of course, no system is a substitute for safe driving habits, which include knowing when it's time to take a break and minimizing distractions. But life happens, so this system is there to help watch your back.
