Volvo's Commitment to the Environment
Did you know that care for the environment is one of Volvo's core values (together with safety and quality)? Protecting people encompasses much more than minimizing the likelihood, or effects, of an accident. It also means looking after our environment. Environmental care has long been one of Volvo Cars' core values. In fact, our environmental policy states that our goal is to be a leader in the premium-car segment. Environmental care is vital for us; we consider it part of the Volvo driving experience!
As a car maker, we try to minimize the negative impact car production, use and any related waste may have on the environment. We have been working systematically to reduce that impact since the early 1970s, when we initiated efforts to reduce hydrocarbon emissions and phase out the use of heavy

metals and other environmentally harmful substances. The biggest challenge facing the automotive industry today is to cut emissions of carbon dioxide, from both our processes and products.
We know that environmental care involves more than just being able to market a particular drive train. That's why our environmental programs embrace a car's complete life cycle, from development and production, as well as fuel economy and emissions, to final disposal and recycling (all Volvos are at least 85% recyclable).
Some of Volvo's environmental achievements over the years include:
1945 Volvo introduces a remanufacturing parts system known as Volvo Genuine Exchange Parts. Currently, this program comprises about 2,000 parts worldwide, from engines and gearboxes to combined instruments and control units.
1976 Volvo introduces the world's first three-way catalytic converter and Lambda-Sond, which makes it possible to reduce emissions of harmful exhaust gases by 90%. Also, Volvo received the US national environmental industry award for "excellence in pollution control."
1991 The new paint shop in Volvo's Torslanda plant becomes the car industry's cleanest, due to use of efficient technology and processes, including water-based paint.
1991 Volvo produces its first CFC-free car – entirely without ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons.
1998 PremAir – a radiator coating that can convert ground-level ozone into oxygen.
2004 Volvo's new V8 in the XC90 is the world's first in its class to comply with ULEV II standards.
