VHMC Story: Jim Steinberg

In their almost 500,000 miles together, Jim Steinberg and his Volvo (Old Yeller) have shared many adventures. Jim Steinberg has been a professional photographer and Steamboat Springs resident for over thirty years. His passion for nature’s beauty has led him to remote corners of Colorado as well as around the world, and he is constantly traveling, sometimes more than six months a year. They (Jim and Old Yeller) have driven many "four wheel drive only" roads, including the top of Engineer Pass (the west side) in southwestern Colorado. They have pulled many vehicles out of ditches during and after snowstorms (many of which have been large SUVs and pickup trucks!).

While away from home his Volvo in addition to its duties as a reliable and economic vehicle, also serves as his office, living room, kitchen, dining room and bedroom. Jim estimates that over their time together he has slept in the cozy back compartment more than 1,200 nights - that’s well over three years!

Over this span, they have had 5 radios, 4 water pumps, 3 fuel pumps, 2 clutches, and one driver.

To celebrate their years together, Portfolio Publications is hosting a contest to see who can guess the date Jim Steinberg will turn 500,000 miles with Old Yeller. The winner of the contest will win:

  • an autographed copy of Jim's acclaimed book Colorado Less Traveled: Journeys off the Beaten Path
  • a copy of his award-winning A Year in Colorado wall and engagement calendars

Visit www.portfoliopublications.com to learn more about these truly awesome products.

To see contest results, visit their MySpace page and either send them a message or a comment.
