Volvo continues to enrich lives in the Vail valley
Reprinted from the Vail Daily, May 16, 2006
Volvo was once again involved with a great cause in the Vail Valley -
the Vail Valley Medical Center Volunteer Corps raffle to support the Vail Valley Medical Center.
Nearly $50,000 worth of raffle tickets were sold to assist in the purchase of a 64-slice CT three-dimensional scanner to assist in the diagnosis of heart disease. The prize was a shiny, new Volvo S40. And, never has a more inspirational person been lucky enough to be the winner.
The winner, Donald Nechkash, actually works for Vail Resorts - he manages the adventure center during the winter, which includes the ice-skating rink, and heads up lake activities in the summer.
Mr. Nechkash bought his book of raffle tickets a couple of weeks before the drawing at Shaw Regional Cancer Center after an appointment with his doctor, the cancer specialist.
He recently recalled, "The last appointment was a month ago and I got an 'all clear' from Dr. Hardenbergh with the follow-up scan,"and "That's when I bought a book of tickets."
Cancer has been a consistent factor in Mr. Nechkash's life. He lost his father on Mother's Day 2000 to kidney cancer. And, in April 2004, he began his face-to-face encounter with cancer - stage 4 rectal cancer.
Ironically, the rectal cancer actually saved his life. As a result of the chemotherapy treatments a doctor found a tumor on his kidney. This diagnosis resulted in Stage 3 kidney cancer treatments. Three months of treatments at the Shaw Cancer Center followed.
Unfortunately, cancer wasn't through with his family, though. Two weeks after his kidney was removed, his mother also was diagnosed with kidney cancer. And, she succumbed to her illness the day after Easter - shortly after he had his final visit with her - and won the keys to his new car.
Mr. Nechkash's feelings about his care at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center, his doctors and the rest of staff are pretty clear - "They saved my life."
